Pronoun Definition: A word used in place of noun is known as pronoun.
Note: Pronoun is used in sentences to avoid repetition of the noun in a sentence over and over again.
Example:
- Michael is at the movie with Michael’s wife.Michael enjoys spending time with Michael’s wife.
Note: In the above example noun (Michael) is used over and over again, to avoid such repetition we can simply replace this noun with pronouns like he, his, her.
- Michael is at the movie with his wife. Heenjoys spending time with her.
TYPES OF PRONOUN
There are several types of pronoun.
1. Personal Pronoun: Pronouns in their different forms show person, number, gender (whether male, female) and case (the relationship of a word with other words) known as personal pronoun. Personal pronouns are I, we, us, you, your, yourself, they, them themselves
Example:
- We are happy.
- They bethought them of a new expedient.
Note: Bold word are personal pronouns.
Types of Personal Pronoun:
Personal pronouns are divided into two categories;
- Subjective Pronouns: Pronoun which act as subject in a sentence known as Subjective pronoun. Subjective pronouns are (he, she, it, I, we, you, they).
- Objective Pronouns. A pronoun which act as the object in the sentence known as objective pronoun. They are (him, her, it, me, us, you, them).
Example: In the depths of her,she too didn’t want to go.
Note: In the above example she is subjective pronoun and her is objective pronoun.
2.Possessive Pronouns:Pronouns that shows ownership known as possessive pronouns. Possessive pronouns are forms of personal pronouns. Mine, yours, his, hers, theirs, it’s are possessive pronouns because they show possession.
Example:
- This cap is mine.
- Hadia is Ali’s wife.
Note: Bold words are possessive pronouns because they show possession.

3. Indefinite Pronouns:Pronouns refer to people, places or things in general known as indefinite pronouns. Most common pronouns are all, many, either, none, anybody, anything, each, several, none, one, everything, nothing, etc.
Example:
- All were drowned.
- Nobody was there to rescue the child.
- His words are in everyone’s mouth.
Note: Bold words are indefinite pronouns.
4.Demonstrative Pronoun:pronouns which referred to a group of persons, places or things known as demonstrative pronouns. This, that, these, those are known as demonstrative pronouns.
Examples:
- Those were merely excuses.
- This is a present from my mother.
- That is the Red Fort.
Note: Bold words are demonstrative pronouns because they referred to things, persons or places.
5.Relative pronouns: Pronoun which refer to an earlier noun, sentence or part of a sentence known as relative pronouns. Usually, relative pronouns are who, whom, which, whose, that.
Examples:
- I met John who had just returned.
- I have found the book which I lost.
- Here is the pen that you lent me.
Note: Above bold words are relative pronouns.
6.Distributive Pronouns:pronouns which refer to person, or things one at a time known as distributive pronouns. Each, either, neither etc are distributive pronouns.
Examples:
- Either of you get lost.
- Neither of the accusations is wrong.
- Each of the girls gets a prize.
Note: Bold words are distributive pronouns.
7.Reflexive Pronouns: Pronoun in which action done by the subject reflects upon the subject. Ourselves, yourself, himself, itself, etc. are reflexive pronouns.
Examples:
- You will hurt yourself.
- They hurt themselves.
- We hurt ourselves.
Note: bold words are reflexive pronouns.
8.Emphatic Pronouns: Pronoun which are used for the sake of emphasis known as emphatic pronouns.
Examples:
- I will do it myself.
- She herself says so.
- The town itself is not very large.
Note: bold words are emphatic pronoun s because they show emphasis.
9.Compound Relative Pronouns:Pronouns formed by adding ever, so, or soever to who, which and what are called compound relative pronouns. They are whoever, whichever, whatever, whoso.
Examples:
- Whoever comes is welcome.
- Take whichever attracts you.
- Whatever he does, he does well.
Note: bold words are compound relative pronouns.
10.Interrogative Pronouns:Pronoun which introduces questions known as interrogative pronouns. They are, who, whom, whose, which, what.
Examples:
- Who are you?
- What do you want?
- Whose is this book?
Note: Above bold words are interrogative pronouns.
