PREPOSITION AND ITS TYPES
Definition Preposition: The word which shows the position of one thing with reference to other known as preposition. It is placed before after noun or pronoun. It Always governs a noun or pronoun as an object. Usually, prepositions are by, to, like, about, through, over, with, on, in, of, etc.
Example:
  1. There is a goat in the field.
  2. She is fond of milkshake.
  3. John jumped off the chair.
Note: Given bold words are prepositions.
TYPES OF PREPOSITION
1.Simple preposition: Preposition which usually contain only two syllables known as simple preposition. AT, by, for, in, till, up, with, out, through are simple preposition.
Syllable: Syllable is a unit of pronunciation having one vowel sound, with or without surrounding consonants, forming the whole or a part of a word.
Example:
  1. I will eat with you tonight.
  2. She goes to the theatre.
  3. She is in time for meals.
Note: Given bold words are simple prepositions.
2.Compound preposition: Prepositions which are generally formed by prefixing a preposition to a noun, an adjective or an adverb known as a compound preposition. About, above, across, amongst, below, behind, inside, outside, within, without, etc.
Example:
  1. She was kept behind me.
  2. He went to Pakistan without me.
  3. Just below the pocket was a stain.
Note: Bold words are compound prepositions.
3.Phrase preposition: Groups of words used with the force of a single preposition known as phrase preposition. According to, by reason, in course of, in regard to etc. are phrase prepositions.
Example:
  1. There is a big tree in front of her house.
  2. On behalf of the staff, she read address.
  3. She persevered in spite of difficulties.
Note: given bold words are phrase prepositions.
Kinds of Prepositions                                                                           (According to their Function)
1.Prepositions of Time: Prepositions which tell us about time in a sentence known as Prepositions of Time. For example, in, on, at.
Example:
  1. This is my bag in the last three years.
  2. I will go for an exam on Monday.
  3. The stars shine at night.
Note: Bold words are prepositions of time because they denote time.
2. Prepositions of Place: Prepositions which tell us about place in a sentence known as Prepositions of Time. For example, on, in, at.
Example:
  1. I was in a hall.
  2. The book is on the table.
  3. John is at the bus stop.
Note: Bold words Prepositions of place.
 3.Prepositions of Direction: Prepositions which tell us about direction in a sentence known as Prepositions of direction. For example, into, to, through, towards.
Example:
  1. We are going to home.
  2. She threw a ball into water.
  3. He was coming towards her.
Note: Bold words denote direction known as preposition of direction.
4. Prepositions of Agent: Prepositions which act as an agent between noun and usually verb known as Prepositions of Agent. For example, by, with.
Example:
  1. Homework was finished by me.
  2. John graduated with an honorary degree.
  3. Kid was hit by a car.
Note: Bold words are prepositions of agent.
5.Prepositions of Instruments, devices or Machines: Prepositions which tell us about Instruments, devices or Machines in a sentence known as Prepositions of direction. For example, on, by, with the help of etc.
Example:
  1. She went to home by bus.
  2. This door can’t be open with key.
  3. He checked the patient with the help of a stethoscope.
Note: Above bold words are preposition of Instruments, devices or Machines.
