- Noun Definition:Word that is used as a name of person, place, thing or an idea is known as noun.
Examples:
- John is a good boy. (John and boy are nouns)
- The rose smells sweet. (rose)
- New Delhi is a capital of India. (New Delhi and India are nouns)
- John fill parents with feelings of love. (John and love)
Note: Bold words are nouns because they are names.
- TYPES OF NOUN:
There are several types of noun.
1.Common Noun: Name given in common to every person, refer to general things, unspecific categories, refer to both male and female.
Examples:
- I am studying in school. (school is common noun)
- I live in city. (City common noun)
- Boys are naughty. (Boys considered to be as common noun)
- This is my country. (country is a noun)
2. Proper Noun: Name of some particular person or thing is known as proper noun.
Note: Proper noun always begins with capital letter.
- I am studying in Oxford school.
- I am living in Gujranwala city.
- Ali is a naughty boy.
- This is my Pakistan (name of country).
Note: Given Bold words are proper nouns because they are name of specific places, or person.
3. Abstract Noun: Name of quality, action or state is known as abstract noun. We cannot perceive abstract nouns with our five senses.
Example:
- he thanked them for their kindness and support.
- he roared with laughter.
- He is good.
Note: Given bold words are abstract nouns because they show quality and state of something.
4.Concrete Noun: Noun that can be perceived through five senses known as concrete nouns.
Example:
- Rose is a beautiful flower.
- Banana is my favorite fruit.
- Birds are flying.
Note: Bold words are concrete nouns because they can be perceived through our five senses.
5.Countable Noun: Noun which are countable known as countable noun.
Example:
- These are my pens.
- This cell phone belongs to Ayesha.
- Open our books!
Note: Bold words are countable nouns because they are nouns which we can count easily.
6.Uncountable Noun: Nouns which we cannot count are known as uncountable nouns. They mainly denote substances and abstract things.
Example:
- Add more sugar in my tea.
- I like milk.
- Drink water!
Note: Above bold words are uncountable nouns because we cannot count such nouns.
7.Collective Nouns: Name of a number or collection of person or things that can be taken together and spoken of as one whole noun known as collective nouns.
Example:
- I love my family.
- This is our cricket team.
- The two armies were in position
Note: Family, team and armies are collective nouns because they team is a collection of team members, family is a collection of family members, two armies are collection of airman’s.
8.Singular Noun: Name of single place, person or thing known as singular nouns.
Example:
- This is a cat.
- leave my pen!
- How beautiful is this baby!
Note: cat, pen and baby are singular nouns because these nouns are used for a single person and thing.
9.Plural Nouns: Name of more than one person, place or thing known as plural nouns.
Example:
- These are cats.
- Leave my pens!
- How beautiful are these babies!
Note: cats, pens and babies are plural nouns because these nouns are used for more than one person and thing.
10.Possessive Noun: Nouns that shows ownership known as possessive nouns.
Examples:
- This is my Mom’s cat.
- I love Ali’s car.
- This is my brothers beg.
Note: Bold words show ownership of mom, Ali and brother that’s why these words known as possessive nouns.
